Driveway repairs and restoration

Cracks, potholes, sunken paving and loose edges can make a driveway difficult to use. Benchmark Paving assesses driveway problems and carries out suitable repairs, with site visits from our Caterham base.

We look at the cause and extent of the damage before recommending a repair, resurfacing or replacement. Tell us the surface type and send photographs when you enquire; we can then arrange a free visit and discuss the proposed work.

Common driveway problems we assess

Sunken or uneven block paving

Localised settlement may allow blocks to be lifted and the affected supporting layers corrected before relaying. The cause of movement needs checking, along with joints, edging and the surrounding paving.

Cracks and potholes

Small areas of surface damage may be repairable where the surrounding driveway is sound. Widespread cracking or recurring potholes can indicate that more extensive preparation or reconstruction is needed.

Loose or damaged edges

Failed edging and movement at the boundary can affect neighbouring areas of the drive. We assess the edge restraints, supporting construction and how the driveway meets paths, planting and the road.

Standing water and ruts

A surface patch or extra gravel may not solve a drainage or base problem. Finished levels, the route for rainwater and the stability of the supporting layers need to be considered together.

Repair, resurface or replace?

A local repair can be sensible where damage is limited and the surrounding construction is in suitable condition. Where movement is widespread, the base has deteriorated or drainage needs redesigning, more extensive work may offer a better solution.

Resurfacing is also assessment-dependent: covering an existing drive does not automatically resolve what is happening underneath. We explain the proposed approach so you can compare the work included in each option.

Driveway surfaces and layout ideas

The photographs below show driveway surfaces and finishing details. For your repair, we will assess the actual damage and the condition of the surrounding area.

What affects the cost of a driveway repair?

The affected area is only one factor. The surface material, cause of damage, access, excavation, matching replacement materials, waste removal, drainage and work below the surface can all affect the quotation.

Useful details include when the problem appeared, whether it is getting worse, where water collects and any previous repairs. Photos of both the damage and the whole driveway help us understand the project before a visit.

From site visit to finished paving

1. Inspect the problem

We discuss the history of the damage and examine the surface, edges, levels and drainage to understand the work required.

2. Agree the repair

Review the proposed scope, materials, preparation and likely appearance. Where replacement is worth considering, compare it with the repair option.

3. Complete and advise

Carry out the agreed work and discuss when the area can be used again, how to care for it and any issues to monitor.

Frequently asked questions

Which driveway surfaces can you assess?

We assess block paving, tarmac, resin-bound and gravel driveways. The repair method and suitability depend on the material, its condition and the damage. We will explain what can reasonably be repaired after inspection.

Can sunken block paving be lifted and relaid?

Sometimes. If the blocks and surrounding construction are suitable, the affected area may be lifted, the underlying problem addressed and the blocks relaid. Widespread settlement can require more extensive work.

Will a repair be invisible?

A perfect match cannot be assumed. New materials may differ from weathered paving, and discontinued blocks or aggregate blends can make matching difficult. We will discuss the likely appearance before you decide.

How long does driveway repair work take?

The duration depends on the damage, access, preparation and material. We will discuss the expected work period and any setting or curing time before vehicles can use the repaired area.

Is a repair always cheaper than replacement?

A small, suitable repair may cost less, but repeated repairs to an unsound driveway can be poor value. Compare the scope, expected result and condition of the remaining drive before deciding.
