Brick patio installation
Benchmark Paving installs brick-style paved patios for garden seating areas and paths. We visit customers from our Caterham base to discuss the layout, suitable paving units and the work needed beneath the finished surface.
The smaller units offer scope for patterns, curves and contrasting edges. The choice of paving, jointing and supporting construction must suit outdoor ground use; ordinary wall bricks are not automatically suitable patio paving.
Patterns and details for your patio
Herringbone and basketweave
These arrangements create a visible pattern across the seating area. Consider how the pattern meets borders and whether the patio shape will require substantial cutting.
Simple linear layouts
A running-bond or other straightforward arrangement can provide a quieter finish. The unit size, joint width and direction influence the overall appearance.
Borders and curves
A contrasting edge can separate the patio from lawns or planting. Discuss curves, corners and the connection to garden routes while planning the layout.
Colour and product choice
Compare products made for paving, their outdoor suitability and care guidance. Agree whether the proposed finish uses clay pavers or concrete paving units so the quotation is clear.
Build the patio for the way it will be used
We assess the existing surface, ground, access and levels. Supporting construction, edge restraint and jointing must work together with the selected paving system.
Plan seating and walking routes before the final outline is agreed. Think about moving chairs, access to doors and how the patio meets garden steps or walls.
The surface also needs appropriate falls and drainage. If the old patio has settled or holds water, discuss the cause as part of the preparation rather than repeating the same layout unchanged.
What affects brick patio installation cost?
The area, paving units, pattern, access and preparation affect the quotation. Curves, detailed borders, cuts and changes in level can require additional work.
Ask for the full specification, including removal of the old surface, base, paving, edges and joints. For other finishes, explore our patio options. For vehicle areas, use the separate block paving driveway service.
From site visit to completed work
1. Discuss the layout
Review the garden, furniture space, access and the patterns you prefer.
2. Specify the paving
Agree suitable units, borders, supporting construction and a quotation before installation.
3. Finish and hand over
Complete the agreed paving and explain the jointing, cleaning and care requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose the pattern and border?
Yes. We can discuss suitable patterns and contrasting edges, including how they fit the shape and size of the space.
Can ordinary house bricks be used?
The units need to be suitable for outdoor paving. Do not assume a brick intended for wall construction will perform appropriately on the ground; confirm the product specification.
Can damaged areas be repaired later?
Individual units may be replaceable, depending on the construction and availability of matching paving. Movement or repeated damage may require attention to the supporting layers.
Are brick patios maintenance-free?
No. Regular cleaning and care of the joints and edges remain necessary. Follow the guidance for the selected paving and jointing products, especially before pressure washing or applying treatments.
