Block paving driveway installation
Block paving gives you scope to shape the entrance to your home with different colours, laying patterns and border details. Benchmark Paving installs block-paved driveways from our Caterham base, with a site visit to assess the space and discuss the finish.
We plan the paving around vehicle use, pedestrian access, existing levels and drainage. The aim is a driveway that looks right alongside the house and has the preparation it needs beneath the blocks.
Patterns, colours and borders
Laying pattern
Herringbone, stretcher bond and basketweave create different effects. The chosen block, shape of the drive and intended use help determine an appropriate layout. We can discuss how the pattern meets paths, corners and entrances.
Block choice
Size, colour and surface texture influence the overall appearance. Compare the options alongside your brickwork and garden features, and consider how the colour will look across the full driveway rather than a small sample.
Contrasting borders
A different colour or block arrangement can frame the driveway, define a parking area or follow a curved lawn. The edge also needs suitable restraint; it is part of the construction as well as the design.
Paths and finishing details
Matching or contrasting paving can connect the drive to a door, side path or patio. Levels, steps, covers and drainage channels need to be planned before laying begins.
A sound base, secure edges and a drainage plan
Block paving should be built for the ground and expected use. The work can include excavation, a compacted sub-base, suitable bedding, edge restraints, laying and cutting the blocks, then jointing and final compaction as appropriate to the chosen system.
Finished levels need to work with your property and direct surface water appropriately. Conventional block paving and permeable block paving are different construction systems; ask which is being proposed and how its drainage will work.

What affects a block paving quote?
The area, chosen block, pattern, border complexity and cutting affect the work. So do access, excavation, old-surface removal, ground conditions and drainage. Steps or changes to adjoining paths should be included in the scope.
A site visit allows us to measure the driveway and talk through those details. Request a clear quotation so you can compare preparation and finishing work alongside the price.
From site visit to finished paving
1. Plan the layout
Discuss the block style, laying pattern and borders alongside parking, access and drainage. We assess the existing ground and agree the scope of work.
2. Prepare and lay
The supporting layers and edges are prepared before the blocks are laid and cut to fit. Jointing and compaction complete the surface according to the selected system.
3. Care and repair
Sweep away debris and use cleaning methods suitable for the blocks and joints. Joints may need attention over time; settlement should be assessed rather than repeatedly covered up.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a block-paved driveway last?
Its lifespan depends on the blocks, supporting construction, drainage, traffic and upkeep. A well-prepared base and suitable maintenance matter more than a universal lifespan promise. We can discuss the specification proposed for your driveway.
Can individual blocks be repaired or replaced?
Individual blocks can often be lifted and relaid or replaced. The cause of settlement or damage still needs checking, and matching weathered blocks exactly may not be possible. See our driveway repair service for an assessment.
Will weeds grow between the blocks?
Seeds can settle in joints, particularly where dirt and debris build up. Regular sweeping, appropriate cleaning and maintaining the joints help manage growth. Block paving should not be described as maintenance-free.
Is block paving permeable?
Some block paving systems are designed to let water pass through the joints and supporting layers. Standard block paving does not automatically work that way. The whole construction and drainage route need to be specified.
