Porcelain patio installation
Porcelain paving offers a manufactured finish with a choice of colours, textures and slab sizes for outdoor living spaces. Benchmark Paving installs porcelain patios from our Caterham base, helping you plan the layout and choose paving suited to outdoor use.
We consider the space for furniture, the connection to doors and paths, changes in level and drainage alongside the appearance. Arrange a free site visit to discuss your patio and receive a no-obligation quotation.
Choose porcelain to suit the space
Colour and appearance
Consider how the paving works with your house, garden walls, fencing and planting. Look at samples in the outdoor setting and discuss the selected product, finish and batch when ordering.
Slab size and layout
Larger formats and different laying patterns change the look and the amount of cutting required. Plan the proportions around the available space rather than choosing slab size from a photograph alone.
Outdoor surface suitability
Choose paving intended for the proposed outdoor use. Discuss the product information and slip-resistance characteristics; no finish should be treated as slip-proof in every condition.
Edges, paths and steps
Borders, transitions and steps should work with the patio design and levels. Include these in the plan so access between the house, lawn and other garden areas is considered from the start.
Preparation, bedding and drainage matter
Porcelain needs a suitable supporting base and a laying method that follows the selected manufacturer’s guidance. For a mortar-bed installation, this commonly includes full support beneath the slabs, a compatible bonding primer and suitable joints. Correct cutting and handling are also part of the work.
Finished levels and falls must be planned with an appropriate route for rainwater, particularly near doors and the house. The material choice does not remove the need for drainage design. The selected product’s guidance should govern the bedding, bonding and jointing specification.
What affects a porcelain patio quote?
Area and paving choice are starting points. Removing the old patio, access, excavation, base preparation, bedding, cutting, jointing, drainage, steps and edge details can all change the work and price.

From site visit to finished paving
1. Plan and select
Discuss the seating area, routes through the garden, paving samples, layout, levels and any steps or borders. Agree the proposed work and quotation.
2. Prepare and lay
Complete the agreed base and drainage preparation, then bed, cut and joint the paving using a method suitable for the selected product.
3. Finish and maintain
Discuss when the patio can be used and furniture placed on it. Follow the selected paving and jointing products’ cleaning and care guidance.
Frequently asked questions
How does porcelain compare with sandstone?
Porcelain offers a more consistent manufactured appearance, while natural sandstone has individual variations in colour and texture. Compare samples, budget, outdoor suitability and care requirements. Both need appropriate installation and drainage.
Is porcelain paving slip-proof?
No surface is slip-proof in every condition. Choose a product intended for the proposed outdoor use and consider its tested characteristics. Water, dirt, algae and ice can affect surfaces, so cleaning and suitable drainage still matter.
Does a porcelain patio need maintenance?
Yes. Sweep away debris, keep drainage clear and clean the paving and joints using suitable products and the manufacturer’s instructions. Low water absorption does not make a patio immune to dirt or surface growth.
Can you lay porcelain over an old patio?
Do not assume the existing patio provides a suitable base. Its stability, bedding, levels and drainage need assessment. Removal and rebuilding may be required to achieve an appropriate installation.
Can you include steps and garden paths?
Yes. These can be considered as part of the layout and quotation. Tell us how you use the garden and which adjoining areas you want included when arranging the visit.
