Gravel driveway installation

A gravel driveway creates a loose-stone finish with a choice of colours and textures. Benchmark Paving designs and installs gravel driveways from our Caterham base, with site visits to assess the layout, ground, access and the way you use the space.

The stone is only part of the installation. Preparation, containment and drainage matter too, and loose gravel needs ongoing care. Arrange a free site visit to compare the options and discuss a no-obligation quotation.

Plan the gravel, borders and layout

Aggregate choice

Colour, size and shape affect both the appearance and how the surface feels underfoot. Discuss a suitable driveway aggregate and look at samples alongside the brickwork, walls and planting around your home.

Edging and containment

Edges help define the driveway and contain loose stones. Consider the entrance, lawn borders, paths and any changes in level. Some movement of loose gravel should still be expected.

Parking and access

Allow enough space to park and manoeuvre, and think about delivery routes, bins and pedestrian access. Tell us about pushchairs or mobility needs so these can be considered when comparing surfaces.

Slopes and transitions

Loose stone can move on gradients and where vehicles turn. We can assess the layout and discuss whether gravel is suitable for the whole area or whether another surface is more practical.

A gravel driveway still needs proper preparation

Covering weak or uneven ground with fresh gravel does not resolve the cause of rutting or settlement. The supporting construction, preparation and depth of the surface layer should suit the ground and intended use.

Rainwater must also have a suitable route through or away from the construction. A loose-stone surface alone does not guarantee that the ground below can absorb water. Discuss drainage, finished levels and the boundaries of the driveway during the site visit.

What affects a gravel driveway quote?

The measured area, selected aggregate, removal of old surfaces, excavation, supporting layers, edging and drainage all contribute to the price. Access for deliveries and waste removal can also affect the work.

Compare the complete installation rather than the price of the loose stone alone. If the existing gravel drive needs attention, discuss whether topping up is appropriate or whether rutting and drainage need to be addressed first. Read about driveway repairs.

From site visit to finished paving

1. Assess and choose

We look at the ground, access, gradient and drainage, then discuss the aggregate, shape and edging that suit the property.

2. Prepare and install

Complete the agreed preparation, supporting layers and edges, then place the specified gravel and finish the connections to adjoining areas.

3. Maintain the finish

Rake displaced gravel, remove debris and keep drainage routes clear. Discuss when topping up is needed and how to care for the selected surface.

Frequently asked questions

What maintenance does gravel need?

Expect to rake displaced stone, remove leaves and debris, deal with weeds and top up gravel when needed. Maintenance depends on traffic, layout and the surrounding trees and garden.

Will a gravel driveway become weed-free?

No. Seeds can settle in debris on the surface even where preparation includes measures to manage weeds. Regular maintenance remains part of caring for a loose-gravel drive.

Is gravel suitable for a sloping driveway?

It depends on the gradient, access and how vehicles use the drive. Loose stones can move on slopes or turning areas. We will assess suitability and discuss alternatives where necessary.

Does gravel guarantee good drainage?

No. Water needs an appropriate route through the full construction or a designed drainage arrangement. The ground beneath, supporting layers and finished levels all need assessment.

Can you refresh an existing gravel driveway?

We can assess the existing surface and discuss topping up, levelling or more extensive preparation. Persistent ruts, movement or standing water should be investigated rather than covered with additional stone.
