Concrete paving slab patio installation
Benchmark Paving installs concrete paving slab patios, with site visits from our Caterham base. We help you plan a usable seating area and garden routes, then assess the ground and preparation needed to build them.
This service uses manufactured paving slabs laid as individual units. Choose the colour, texture and format around the way you use the garden, the appearance of the property and the care you are prepared to give the finished surface.
Plan the slabs and the space together
Size and proportions
Large and small formats change the appearance of a patio and the amount of cutting required. Set out furniture and walking routes first so the paved area has room for everyday use.
Colour and surface finish
Compare the actual product options, including their suitability for outdoor use. A photograph is a starting point; confirm the supplier, colour and finish in the quotation.
Pattern and edges
A straightforward grid, a staggered layout or a border can each give structure to the patio. Discuss how cuts will be arranged at boundaries and around existing features.
Steps and adjoining areas
Consider the transition to the lawn, side path and doors. Changes in height may need steps or supporting construction as part of the agreed work.
A stable installation starts below the slabs
We assess the old paving or bare ground before proposing the supporting build-up. A worn or uneven base cannot be assumed suitable simply because a new slab will cover it.
Bedding, slab support and jointing need to follow the selected product’s requirements. The design also needs suitable finished levels and a route for surface water. Read about our groundworks and drainage service.
Tell us about any narrow access, known services, standing water or movement in the old patio. These details help define the work and avoid comparing quotations that include different levels of preparation.
What is included in a slab patio quote?
Area, slab specification, access, excavation and disposal affect the price. Drainage, steps, borders and intricate cuts can also change the scope.
Compare the complete installation: preparation, slabs, bedding, jointing and finishing. Our patio overview also links to sandstone and porcelain if you want to consider other materials.
From site visit to completed work
1. Assess the garden
Discuss the seating area, routes, existing surface and access. Measure the proposed patio and review levels.
2. Agree the layout
Confirm the slabs, pattern, preparation and quotation, then carry out the agreed installation.
3. Complete the finish
Finish joints and edges and explain use and care of the selected paving.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a poured concrete patio?
No. This page covers individual manufactured paving slabs. A poured concrete surface is a different construction and finish.
Can you replace an uneven patio?
Yes, we can assess replacement work. Unevenness or movement may indicate problems below the slabs, so the supporting construction should be checked.
Can the same slabs be used for a driveway?
Do not assume a patio slab is suitable for vehicles. The product and supporting construction must be specified for the intended loading. Discuss a driveway separately.
What maintenance will the patio need?
Keep the surface clear of debris and follow the slab and jointing manufacturers’ cleaning advice. Check for damaged joints or movement and address problems rather than covering them over.
