Turf laying and new lawn installation

Benchmark Paving lays natural turf for new and replacement lawns, with site visits from our Caterham base. We assess the existing ground and discuss how the lawn will fit alongside your patio, paths and planting areas.

Fresh turf changes the appearance of a garden quickly, but it still needs to root into prepared soil. We explain the groundwork and care involved so you know what is needed before and after installation.

A lawn suited to the garden and its use

A new lawn area

Consider the lawn’s shape, access and the space needed for seating, paths and borders. Finished levels should connect sensibly with the rest of the garden.

Replacing worn-out turf

Look at why the old lawn has deteriorated before replacing it. Shade, traffic, compacted ground and drainage may need attention for new grass to establish.

Preparing the soil

The work may include removing the old lawn, dealing with debris and weeds, improving the soil and preparing an even surface. The required scope depends on the existing ground.

Joining lawn and paving

Plan edges and transitions alongside your patio or garden steps. Practical access helps protect the lawn from concentrated wear.

Preparation and establishment are part of the job

During the visit we assess the lawn area, soil condition, levels, light and access for materials. Tell us about standing water, previous lawn problems and how the space is used. Fresh turf should not simply cover an unresolved ground problem.

The lawn needs care while roots establish. Arrange access to water and follow the advice for the turf and conditions. Keep new turf adequately watered during dry weather, limit use while it roots, and begin mowing only once it is sufficiently established.

Deep shade and heavy use can still limit grass growth. We can discuss the site conditions and whether a different layout is more practical. See the RHS guidance on laying and caring for turf and lawns in shade.

What affects a turfing quotation?

Lawn area, access, removal of old turf, soil preparation, any additional soil and the selected turf affect cost. Levelling or addressing drainage problems can involve more work than laying turf on an already prepared area.

Share approximate dimensions, photographs and details of access. We will discuss the preparation and installation included, together with the aftercare needed once the new lawn is laid.

From site visit to completed work

1. Assess and plan

Discuss the lawn area, intended use, light, soil and existing problems. Agree how it will meet adjoining surfaces.

2. Prepare and lay

Complete the agreed ground preparation and lay the selected natural turf to the planned shape and levels.

3. Help the lawn establish

Follow watering and use advice while roots develop. Discuss when the lawn can be mown and used more normally.

Frequently asked questions

Do you lay natural turf or artificial grass?

This service covers natural turf and lawn replacement. Tell us if you are considering a different surface so we can discuss suitable options before quoting.

Can new turf fix a waterlogged lawn?

Fresh grass alone does not resolve the cause of waterlogging. The ground conditions and drainage need assessment before a new lawn is laid.

Will turf grow in a shaded garden?

It depends on the amount of light and the growing conditions. A suitable grass mix may help in moderate shade, but even shade-tolerant grass can struggle in deep shade.

When can I use a newly laid lawn?

Give the turf time to root before regular use. The timing depends on weather, growth and aftercare; follow the advice for the lawn rather than relying on a fixed number of days.

Can turfing be combined with landscaping?

Yes. We can plan the lawn alongside paving, fencing, walls and steps. Heavier construction work should be considered in the sequence so new turf is not unnecessarily disturbed.
