Groundworks and drainage for driveways and gardens

Benchmark Paving provides groundworks and drainage as part of driveway, patio and garden projects. Based in Caterham, we visit your property to assess the existing ground, access, finished levels and surface water before proposing the work.

Good preparation supports the visible finish. Whether you are installing a new drive or addressing water collecting on an existing patio, the solution needs to suit the site and the cause of the problem.

The work beneath and around your paving

Excavation and preparation

Removing an old surface and preparing the ground creates space for the agreed construction. Existing conditions, waste removal and machine access affect how the work is planned.

Supporting bases

The build-up beneath a driveway or patio must suit the ground and intended use. Base preparation and compaction should be part of the specification for new driveway installation.

Levels and surface water

We assess where water collects and how the finished surface relates to the house, boundaries and neighbouring areas. Falls and drainage need to be considered together.

Existing problem areas

Persistent puddles, settlement or recurring surface damage may need work below the paving. We assess the affected area before discussing repairs or more extensive reconstruction.

Drainage needs a suitable destination for the water

A channel or gully collects water, but the full arrangement must provide an appropriate destination for it. The proposed route, ground conditions and any existing drainage need to be understood before an installation is agreed.

Soakaways and other infiltration options depend on the site and the ability of the ground to absorb water. They are not suitable everywhere. Existing drainage connections also need checking; the choice should follow assessment rather than a standard solution applied to every garden.

We discuss drainage alongside the surface specification. A material described as permeable does not by itself confirm that the whole construction and ground below can manage rainwater.

Paving and garden construction ideas

These photographs show finished outdoor spaces. The supporting layers and drainage for your own project will be assessed and specified separately.

What affects groundworks and drainage costs?

Excavation, ground conditions, depth and extent of preparation, access, removal of spoil and the drainage arrangement affect the quotation. Existing services and the condition of surrounding construction can also influence the work.

Tell us where water collects, when it happens and whether previous repairs have been attempted. Photographs during wet weather can help explain the problem. A visit is needed to assess the site and proposed work.

From site visit to completed work

1. Assess the site

Discuss the planned surface or current problem, then review access, levels, ground conditions and existing drainage.

2. Agree the specification

Set out the preparation, supporting layers, drainage route and finishing work, including any further checks needed before installation.

3. Prepare and finish

Complete the agreed groundwork and drainage before the final surface, then explain access points and routine care.

Frequently asked questions

Can drainage be added to an existing patio or drive?

Sometimes. The levels, existing construction and suitable route for water need assessment. It may require lifting or altering part of the surface rather than adding a channel alone.

Will a soakaway solve every drainage problem?

No. Suitability depends on the ground, available space and the wider drainage arrangement. The proposed solution needs to follow site assessment.

Does a permeable surface remove the need to assess drainage?

No. Water must pass through an appropriate construction and have a suitable route into the ground or a designed drainage system. The surface name alone is not enough.

Can you quote from photographs?

Photos and approximate dimensions help us understand the enquiry, but below-ground conditions, levels and access usually require a visit before the scope can be agreed.

Does this service cover emergency drain unblocking?

This service focuses on groundworks and surface-water drainage for paving and garden projects. Describe your issue when contacting us so we can confirm whether it falls within the work we undertake.
