A weathered concrete driveway has given way to grey herringbone block paving, framed by sweeping curves and contrasting borders. These photographs follow the Benchmark Paving project from the original frontage through clearance to the finished drive.
Before: a tired concrete frontage
The original driveway was made up of large, light-coloured concrete sections divided by reddish strips. Cracks were visible near the entrance, and a planted area with a small tree occupied part of the space beside the hedge.

Preparation: clearing the old surface
With the old driveway removed, the exposed ground reveals the full area in front of the house and garage. The progress photograph captures this early stage of the transformation, with the existing hedge and brick boundary walls still framing the frontage.

After: grey paving with a sweeping border
The finished driveway uses grey blocks laid in a herringbone pattern, creating a consistent surface across the approach to the garage and front door. Lighter edging bands, separated by a darker strip, give the layout a clearly defined outline.
Along the right-hand side, the border sweeps around the hedge and curves into the entrance. This softens the shape of the paved area and brings the driveway, brick walls and planting together. The grey tones also provide a calm contrast to the warm brickwork of the house.

Ideas to take from this project
A simple paving colour can still create plenty of interest when the pattern and edging work together. Here, the herringbone layout adds texture, the pale bands emphasise the shape, and the curved edge makes a feature of the space beside the hedge.
